Day 177: Pray Dangerously And Let God Break You

The name Jabez means “he causes pain”, her mother experienced an excruciating pain during his birth and consequently named him Jabez. It must have been bad for her mother to name her as such. This man later became honorable as it is written. He was not satisfied with his name and he made a very famous prayer. The prayer of Jabez.

“Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” God granted him this request. It is a very simple prayer, a prayer all of us want to pray. Bless me and protect me. I want that myself. But also, I want more than just that.

Because I want more, I also need to pray somewhat differently. This prayer in itself can be limited because it is only about asking. It focusses on what we want and not necessarily what God wants. If we want to be much stronger and grow to maturity, we need to be willing to go the walk and do the work. God will use trials to help you and me grow and be strong. No one want to be tried and be taken to wilderness but God will use that same thing to perfect you.

A famous scripture says, consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything – (James 1:2-4). Now, if you only pray the Jabez kind of prayer, you will be robbing yourself opportunities to grow and mature.

Do not get me wrong here, it feels so good to pray to God to keep you from pain but do not get comfortable there. It should not be our only desire. If you continue praying safe payers and trial and hardship come your way, you will fail to withstand and you will fall.

It is fine to pray for protection and blessings from God, but what if you want more than just that? What if you desire power and strength from heaven, the unwavering kind of faith and genuine companion with God? Instead of just keeping yourself safe, pray dangerously and let God break you!
