Day 170: Unorganized Desk is Chaotic & Disruptive.

Roy Baumeister is a social psychologist known for his work on the self, belongingness, self-esteem and self-control among other areas. He asserts that people will exert less self-control after seeing a messy desk than after seeing a clean one.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness is a statement our teachers would mention every monday and friday both in primary and high school during the parade. The intention was to ensure we maintain cleanliness, our school uniform, well kept hair and short nails was the sign of being clean. I appreciate all of them for ensuring we understood the importance of being tidy.

Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”

John 13:10-11

Having learnt to keep my locker tidy and organised in highscool and having carried this behavior with me, I get disturbed anytime I go to a desk that is unkept, seeing paper all over a desk pesters me. When I notice my desk has fallen crumps and papers scattered, it bothers me so much to an extent that I am unable to work untill it is all cleared up.

My experince is that a messy desk brings about unpleasant thoughts in my head which I find hard to ignore; that eventually, I will have to clean the desk. This thought occupies my mental space and uses up my energy which I would otherwise be using constructively elsewhere. Unorganized desk is so chaotic and disruptive. It lowers productivity. Other than occupying my mental space, the clutter, either in my office desk or in the house makes me feel bad about myself.

Just the way you feel after taking a shower after a hot day, tidying up your desk or room has a similar effect. It indicates the person working or living there is self-discplined and is tidy. It demonstrates in a physical way that you are organized and self-controlled. This, affects your inner world, just as dressing up well give you a boost to one’s confidence.

So, get up or get someone to clean up that desk or that room if it is messy! Congrats to you, if you have maintained the tidiness! God loves that.
