Day 52: Human beings can change for the better, Don’t be so judgemental!
I recently shared a hunch on why you should trust your own judgement and think for yourself. You can read it here. My urgument was, often we judge ourselves how we are not good enough and which leads us to adopt a crowd mentality. The final destinationwhich is hopelessness and mediocrity.
Today, I want to share yet another hunch, this time highlighting why you ought not judge others. My book for this month is Man’s search for Meaning By Victor Frankl. A classic book! I want to borrow what Victor says about determinism where he says that, one of the main features of human existence is the capacity to rise above harsh conditions and to grow beyond them. He says that a man is capable of changing the world for the better if possible, and of changing himself for the better if necessary.
This is the reason it becomes very unreasonable to be judgemental of others. Where an individual is today does not determine where and who they will be tomorrow. You must have come across very dangerous criminals who have now changed and have become very resourceful members of a community or a bully young man who all of a sudden change and become an asset to a society.
Victor cites the case of a man he ever encountered in his whole life whom he would dare liken to a satanic figure. He is the guy who put people on the gas chamber, the incinerator (Literary, he is the guy who used to burn people who were still alive in Auschwitz concentration camp) . On follow up, Victor learns that before this man died, He writes an account from his friend, “he showed himself to be the best comrade you can imagine! He gave consolation to everybody. He lived up to the highest conceivable moral standard. He was the best friend I ever met during my long years in prison!”
People change, and often for the better. before you judge and close someone’s case, remember, Human being is capable of changing himself for the better if necessary.
