Day 16: Resolve to be self reliant

Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,

2 Corinthians 3:5

Being able to think independently, embrace your individuality and being able to pursue your goals with courage can be termed as self-reliance; unlike the popular belief that self-reliance is being financially independent. Baumeister define self-reliance as having a reliance on internal resources to provide life with coherence (meaning) and fulfillment”

Avoid relying too much on other people. If the only reason you are productive in your work is to please your boss, you will exhibit poor performance when your boss is not around. If your current behavior is only meant to attract a relationship, what happens when you find out the person you were hoping to attract is in another relationship? Chances of falling back to old behaviors is high. What would happen if you did it for you?

Have a greater motive and resolve to make changes irrespective of who is watching. External support is important, valuable, and just like children who cannot stand and walk on themselves and they heavily rely on support up to some pont in their life, so are you. Do not stick there, grow and learn to stick to your resolutions even without the help of others.

Our society has acclimatized us to feel happy when we receive support, compliments, accolades and praises from other people. If that is not forthcoming, we can feel insecure or vulnerable, sometimes even helpless. Being self-reliant involves the ability to feel confident in yourself when no praises and accolades are there because they may not always be there.

Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,

2 Corinthians 3:5

It can be scary…

Know that you are not your worries, you are much bigger than the challenges you are facing in life. No need of you to fear. You are strong on your own. This is the only way you can become a light even to others, illuminating their paths.
