The Power of Consistency

My 2019 writing experience

Last year I rekindled my desire for writing blogs, I have enjoyed the experience so far. Having started writing a long time ago and stopped, I had to be very consistent since I did not want to start again then stop along the way. Although I feel I would have done much more, I must admit I have remained somehow consistent with what I said I would do. I told my friend that I do not want to start something then drop it along the way, I want to be deliberate about my initiatives and I commit to be consistent in whatever it is I set myself up.

As a beginner, it is very easy to give up especially when you post an article, you do not get a single like or a comment, and when you look at the stats, they are not encouraging and you can get disappointed. Often times, I had to keep reminding myself why I started in the first place. I also realize that even Rome was not built in a single day, I encourage myself and I write and post another one. When I look at the stats for 2019, I am amazed at the many people from different countries who have visited my site. People from over 52 nations have clicked on my blog and I gained over 3000 clicks. When I am reviewing this, the question that pops in my head is what if I stopped; over 3000 people would not have found something useful to read what I had to share. Going forward, my attention will be that person whom I will affect in 2020. Therefore, I cannot stop, I just got fired up!

When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.

Daniel 6:10

Why am I sharing this? Because I understand now, the power of consistency and the incredible benefits that come from committing to do the things you said you would do in a consistent manner. It is easy to slip into a ‘not today, I’ll do it tomorrow’ mindset which eventually will lead you to mediocrity.

Why consistency?

Nature displays consistency. For bacteria, viruses or a cancerous cells to be effective in ruining their host, they have to be consistent in their activities. The cancerous cells rapidly multiply consistently to its favor, to survive. The bacteria do the same thing, viruses the same. To counter their activities and destroy them inside the host body, treatment is done in a consistent manner over a period of time.

Me and you know that there is nothing like being lucky, the persons who we admire and who we may consider lucky had prepared themselves often in oblivion. When they shine in light, we call them lucky. Although there is a group of people who are endowed with more resources than others giving them an upper hand, achieving significant progress in life require deliberate set of actions consistently done over time. There is enough data to confirm that, being raised by wealth parents does not in any way guarantee that you will be wealthy too. If you mismanage and mishandle the wealth, if you lack knowledge and wisdom to manage that inheritance, you will waste away and your inheritance becomes another statistic.

Focus on the things you can control and STOP depending on luck to make a living.

New Year is usually termed by most people as a time of introspection, where people strategize and design new courses of action deciding where they will drive their energy. It is that time of the year where people also commit to forming new habits, starting business, going back to school. This time, many other commitments are made. I do not have a problem with all this, life has many turns and thus we have to keep tweaking until we get a winning formula. I want to highlight what I strongly feel is a key factor in determining how far you will go, being consistent.

Inconsistency Dissipates Your Creative Potential

If there is something, I have experienced and that kills self-confidence, which makes people who are incredibly talented and gifted lag behind is being inconsistent. Not just in their talk but as well as action part. Talented people amounts to nothing when they start something but do not put in the needed time and dedication to finish what they started. The result is a defeated self-confidence and you end up stooping so low! No matter how small the rewards are, start and finish whatever you started, or whatever you said you would do.

One person I do admire is Seth; he does an article each single day for 10 years now! At his age and with his accomplishments he could as well stop and post when he feels like but he cannot do that, he understand the power of consistency and you know what? The results for this habit speaks for themselves!

Consistency Generates Momentum

The reason we celebrate Eliud Kipchoge is very simple, he stays in motion, and anytime you stay in motion you gather momentum, being in motion is lifeblood of any creative endeavor. When I started writing, I would only do 250 words, with time I can easily do 500.

I am made aware that is better off practicing playing guitar for 15 minutes every day than doing an hour once a week. The challenge you may be facing just require that you do not stop, over time, what seemed an obstacle becomes a motivation to proceed. You learn when you are consistent.

Consistency makes room for Judgement.

For you to decide whether something works or not, you must try it for a period of time and in a consistent way. How do you measure effectiveness if what you are measuring is not performed consistently? What motivates me to continue writing is the incremental organic growth that I gain over time. I can tell whether writing consistently works or not. In case I need to change, instead of overhauling, I often do minor tweaking that make the difference.

The next move?

When you learn to be consistent, you can transform your life. What you consistently do ultimately forms the person you become, the things you believe, and the activities you engage in. Whatever it is that you put your focus on come 2020, do one thing extra; remain consistent and you will be surprised by how much you are able to reap at the end.
