Have you ever heard of a statement that all change is against the set rules? I want to share about something that I have been ruminating over the better part of this month, which I strongly feel, holds us anytime we attempt to move out of the box that most of us find ourselves in. Last month I had an experience that I would term as an attempt to uphold status quo, things are okay as they are and no need of rocking the boat. I will not go to details but after the whole development, my conviction now is that, in an attempt to avoid losses or humiliation, humans want to maintain things as they are and not try to disrupt the norm or laid out procedures. The warmth is so alluring that we do not feel the need to change anything. We are not willing to accept challenges that will prompt us to hit the books and learn. That is where this article leads us, faith to learn.
Heresy (I use the word very carefully) is the willful and persistent adherence to an error in matters of faith on the part of a baptized member of the Catholic Church, it is a grave sin, and the punishment involves ipso facto excommunication. It is not tolerable! According to Webster online dictionary, a heretic is a person who differs in opinion from established religious dogma; oxford sums it up very clearly as an opinion profoundly at odds with what is generally accepted, and so, if you call someone a heretic, it is very extremely serious claim especially Catholic circles.
All change is against the rules; it is often never welcome for obvious reasons, fear of the unknown. Fear is a feeling induced by perceived danger or threat, it welcomes what if scenario in our mind. Seth Godin notes that there is a big difference between religion and faith, he says, “Religion is the set of rules created to maximize the chances that you will do what the manager wants you to do. A heretic is someone who has faith but could care less about religion.” Fear of breaking the rules keep you on the periphery other than jumping on the arena, you remain a spectator.
My take on the main challenges affecting organizations, businesses and individuals today is the demand of full imagination and desire of every individual to be more innovative and flexible to new ways of doing things. The design of most organizations is destined to elicit compliance, conformity and predictability. Individuals want to maintain the status quo, they propagate cultures and traditions that make them feel safe and unthreatened. The need for uncertainty is never welcome or embraced. The question that come up is; how do we build businesses that are resilient and innovative? How do we build businesses that are for the future? How can individuals confront the same things that put us in the box? Can we break from religious mentality and embrace Faith?
Organizations need to embrace heretics; designers who want to change the corporate colors, programmers who want to code another program that changes how we work, marketers who want to disrupt the market and so on. We need to question their imaginations and embrace new models of running our enterprises. Heretics in your organizations are not your enemies. They are trying to help you. They are not your problem — they are probably the start of your solution.
Moreover, a person with a dream will only grow more determined in the face of resistance. The same heretic could become your greatest competitor threatening your business profitability and expansion.
